Genesis Invitational
The 2023 Genesis Open is usually one of the favorite stops for the PGA tour, and this year will have a little more energy than it has in recent memory. Riviera Country Club is widely considered one of the top 3 annual courses that the PGA tour visits.
This year it has another loaded field, and there is one extra participant that brings more eyeballs than anyone… One Eldrick Tiger Woods makes his competitive golf return. This will be his first event since the 2022 Open Championship.
The Field includes 23 of the top 25 players in the world. That includes newly re-crowned No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, and the 15-time major champion Tiger Woods, who has surprisingly never won at Rivera.
t would be a massive upset for him to return to the winner’s circle this week, but at 50-1, he will assuredly receive a fair amount of the betting cash.
This is one of the elevated events that the tour established going into this year. With the NFL season being over, this gives golf a shot at taking center stage on a Sunday. This field at this golf course is the perfect setup to take center stage.
This could be the strongest non-major field of the year. McIlroy, Scheffler, and Rahm (the top 3 in the world) will all be teeing it up.
The Golf course features one of the most challenging tests on tour. By the scorecard, you wouldn’t think it would be as difficult, especially in the bomb and gouge age of golf, but the 7,300-yard par-71 makes these guys work for their scores.
The first hole is a 500-yard par 5, which plays as a difficult par 4. Birdie should be expected there. After that hole, there are only three more must-make birdies on the course. The other 2 par fives and the 315-yard par four tenth.
Every other hole on the course averages over par for the history of the tournament. The golf course is designed to test your accuracy from 150 yards. If you can knock it close from that range, this course opens up.
Riveria rewards players that are considered shot makers. You have to position yourself well off the tee and be able to hit it both ways. Scrambling will be at a paramount. Getting up and down is going to position players well.
